RACE COACHING

TYPBC is regarded as one of New Zealand’s premier yacht clubs with more than half of the sailing Olympic medals won over the last two Olympics being by sailors who grew up leaning to race in Tauranga.  It is our intention to continue this success and create future champions through our learn to race programs and regular club racing.  The path to becoming an elite junior sailor in New Zealand is arguably the best in the world.  The typical pathway is as follows:

  1. Optimist Green fleet (9 to 13 years)
  2. Optimist Open fleet (10 to 15 years)
  3. P Class (12 to 15 years)
  4. Starling (13 – 19 years)

After P Class and Starling sailors can move on to international youth classes such as Laser, 29er, or 420; with the next step being Olympic campaigning from the age of 20+.  We provide high quality coaching in all four categories with training sessions focused on developing core and advanced sailboat racing skills.

BOP RACE ACADEMY

In 2022 we will be starting the BOP Race Academy, a fresh initiative with a focus on high level skills training designed to make sailors into national champions and potential world youth champions.  Participation is by invitation although we will make every effort to accommodate sailors of different skill levels into the program where practical.

RACE COACHING COURSE SCHEDULE

We recommend that all sailors participating in Race Coaching programs join in the regular Sunday club racing which from 2022 will consist of training on Sunday mornings on the water from 10:00 to 11:30 and afternoon club racing from 1:00 to 4:00. To assist with the transition from Learn to Sail to Race Coaching and regular racing, the club has a limited supply of Optimists, P Classes, and Starlings available to rent on a short-term basis while you look for a suitable boat of your own, which we can  assist with.

If you are interested to join regular club racing, or possibly attend regional or national events please contact Nick Burfoot  or  Lorenz Poole to discuss the best way to go about this.
