LEARN TO SAIL
TYPBC has a rich history of producing world, Olympic, and Americas Cup champions, all of whom began learning to sail on Tauranga harbor before going on to become champion sailors. TYPBC offers a comprehensive and fun Learn-to-Sail program for children aged 7 to 15 years old from February through April. There are four levels of course as follows:
- Introduction to sailing (2 hours per session / Up to 10 session)
- Level 1 Start Sailing (3 hours per session / Up to 10 sessions)
- Level 2 Sailing Faster (3 hours per session / Up to 10 sessions)
- Level 3 Learn to race (3 hours per session / Up to 10 sessions)
The courses are run during the week and on weekends: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday 4-7 pm, and Saturdays. Our Learn-to-Sail course follows the Yachting New Zealand program and use a fleet of twelve modern Opti cubes. The Opti Cube is the ideal learning boat delivering both safety and fun.
TYPBC’s Learn to Sail course is water-based with some classroom and onshore activities. The course covers water safety, learning to sail and race, sailing rules, rope work, and boat preparation & maintenance.
No sailing experience is necessary, just an ability to swim 50m in a life jacket and have a bit of water confidence, but most importantly the desire to learn and have fun. We provide boats and lifejackets while you will need to supply suitable protective clothing including wetsuit, spray jacket, and hat. Bring also water bottles and sun-screen.
It may not be essential to complete all 10 sessions before moving to the next level. Our coaches can advise when a sailor is ready to progress to the next Learn-to-Sail level and when they can start race coaching courses and Sunday club racing.
Coaches are YNZ qualified, have completed a first aid course, and are trained in powerboat operation and safety. We run one coach to a maximum of six children ratio to ensure that all children are looked after in a supportive and stimulating environment.
For school groups we are able to make custom arrangements to accommodate your school’s requirements. Please contact our head coach to discuss further.
For children in Level 3, Learn to Race you will be encouraged to join in our regular Sunday club racing in the Optimist green fleet where you will get your chance to experience the thrill of sailboat racing for real. Our coaches can advise on the best course of action to get involved on club days including advice on purchasing your own boat or opportunities to rent boats on a short-term basis while you look for a suitable boat of your own, which we can also assist with.
